Specie List of Mammals in Tanzania

With respect to mammals, Tanzania stands out as a megadiversity country. The country lies within the tropics thus exhibiting warm temperatures which favour existence of this taxon of warm blooded biota. The country has a wide range of habitat and geomorphological types including lowlands, highlands, undulating landscapes, dry lands, wetlands, forests, bush lands, open grasslands, inland wetlands and a long stretch of an oceanic environment. Each of these characteristics favours a unique guild of mammalian populations. Many studies have been conducted on these mammals relating to their distribution, population sizes, behavior and taxonomy.

Although a lot more studies are needed to unravel the tremendous knowledge that is potentially contained in this high assemblage of mammals in the country, the present study was undertaken as an initial attempt to collate what is already known about the mammals in terms of taxonomy, distribution, major sources of information and common names. The starting point for this compilation was the list prepared by the TanBIF Country node which was then updated mostly during a three days retread organized by the node.

The book by Wilson and Reader (Wilson and Reader 2005) was our main reference in making the updates in corroboration with data bases available at the department of Zoology and Wildlife Conservation (University of Dar es Salaam), Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute, Serengeti Wildlife Research Centre (nee Serengeti Research Institute), Kingdon (2005) and Stanley (2005).

The present compilation contains 454 species distributed into 12 Orders, 50 Families, and 180 genera. 97 species still need further verifications. Resource Logo EML

Birds of Tanzania

Tanzania has the richest bird life which now stands at 1,148 known species. However, this information is currently not freely available for public use. A checklist presented here is the first reading online for anyone interested in understanding of the birds of Tanzania. The nomenclature is based on Britton, P.E. (Ed.) (1980) Birds of East Africa (EANHS) with update versions provided in Tanzania Bird Atlas. Endemic species are marked by a letter E. Although this list is subject to changes due to usual taxonomic revisions and/or new records provided it is a useful guidance especially to those without access to recent literature. Kiswahili names are from Mlingwa, C.O.F. (2000) Checklist of Kiswahili names of the Birds of Tanzania, Wildlife Conservation Society of Tanzania.
We are privileged to have the opportunity to compile the checklist for Tanzania Biodiversity Information Facility (TanBIF) under COSTECH. We commend this initiative meant to reach a wider audience. Resource Logo EML

Plants are a vital part of the world’s biodiversity, yet they are endangered by a combination of factors: over-exploitation, agricultural activities and forestry practices, urbanization, land use changes and spread of invasive species. Therefore, the need for data basing and digitizing the rich flora of Tanzania is equally important in order to catch up with an alarming rate of natural habitats degradation. Also The available data is not easily accessible to the public and other institutions for use. Resource Logo EML

Kihansi Gorge Amphibian Species Checklist

This is a checklist of Amphibian Species in the Kihansi Gorge in the Udzungwa Tanzania. It is an important information on Biodiversity status of the Udzungwa Mountains as a Mega Biodiverse Hotspot of the Eastern Arc Mountains. It contains endemic and species with the risk of extinction (endangered, critically endangered, extinct in the wild). The studies on amphibian species commenced with the discovery of the Kihansi Spray Toad (KST) (Nectophrynoides asperginis) in December 1996 and its description in 1998 (Poynton et al., 1998). To date several species of amphibians in the Order Anura in Five different Families have been identified to exist in the Kihansi Gorge. Unfortunately Nectophrynoides asperginis went extinct in the wild mainly due to habitat alteration by the Kihansi River water abstraction where water is used for Hydro power project. Further studies are underway to establish the exact cause of the population crash of KST in the Kihansi Gorge as one of the effort to bring back the KST population in the wild. These include the studies on Chytrid fungus, sediments flush from the reservoir, agricultural pesticide residue and water quality changes. Thanks to the Captive breeding programs that the species is under control for reintroduction back to its original habitat. This description therefore intends to report the amphibians occurring in the Kihansi Gorge i.e. amphibians occurring in the Spray Wetlands, at the edges of the spray wetlands as well as those appearing in other areas of the gorge. These are important for testing different scientific scenarios related to KSTs disappearance in the Kihansi Gorge since 2003. Resource Logo EML

Medicinal Plant Records of Tanzania

The Institute of Traditional Medicine in collaboration with traditional healers has so far documented and collected about 4500 specimens records of medicinal plants species in Tanzania. About 10000 voucher specimens of these are deposited at the herbarium of the Institute of Traditional Medicine (ITM). This useful ethnobotanical information at the institute is in the form of voucher files and old, hand written field notes. This makes it difficult to locate and select plants for research, teaching and information dissemination. Inability to retrieve data from the herbarium can be solved by creation of a digital medicinal plants data base. Specimen images were captured by a digital camera while GPS were used for determination of spatial references for areas around Dar es Salaam and Coast region. Resource Logo EML

Herbarium Specimen of the Institute of Traditional Medicine, Tanzania

The data set provided is a record of Herbarium collections mostly medicinal plant species recorded from local healers in various parts of Tanzania. The voucher specimen are deposited at the Institute of Traditional Medicine, Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, Tanzania. The Institute of Traditional Medicine is charged with the responsibility to research into traditional healing systems, in Tanzania, and identify materia medica which can be modernized and developed into drugs and useful traditional healing practices which can be adopted for improvement of the health of the people. The generation of safety and efficacy data on these plants and remedies is a pre-requisite before these remedies can be streamlined into the health care system. It is estimated that there are about 10,000 records of plant specimen at the institute. The digitization work was initiated by INASP by supporting training on digitization, the work was implemented by the university under the financial support of GBIF. A total of 4500 records are uploaded to the GBIF Tanzania node known as Tanzania Biological Information Facility (TanBIF) and can be viewed through GBIF web. Resource Logo EML

EDIBLE WILD FOODS AVAILABLE IN RURAL TANZANIA: A CASE OF RUBEHO VILLAGE

Tanzania is endowed with a wild range of foods that occurs naturally.Wild foods serves a very important role in buffering against food shortage and nutritional deficiencies. Recently, biodiversity issue have arisen as one of the major concerns in food and nutritional interventions programmes. The current emphasis on the use of biodiversity in nutrition improvement emphasizes a need for a more detailed understanding of the role of biodiversity in improving nutritional status and well well being. Biodiversity has a link to dietary diversity. Adequate diversity of diet leads to improved growth and development. This study therefore aimed at informing the general population that there are a wide range of wild foods that are available in our communities for which detailed studies are needed to establish a linkage of their availability, their nutritional values and how they contribute to food and nutritional security. Resource Logo EML
